Year Ahead Forecast - 2009

for the week of Monday, 5 January 2009

If 2008 was a year of dramatic upheaval in politics and economics, from the world food crisis to the current financial crisis, 2009 is set to be a little less dramatic – but no more honest. Outer planets offer a lot of social drama, and Saturn will certainly provide its share of social justice. Significant energies will tend toward rebellion and progress. We start the year with warrior Mars affecting Gaza, Sri Lanka, and Iraq; no shortage of progress needed.

Pluto in accounts

Pluto entered Capricorn on November 26, 2008 and this aspect will characterise the next decade and a half. Capricorn governs material wealth and ambition and Pluto is the planet of revolutionary change. Living beyond our means, with all the damage this has been doing to the planet, will no longer be acceptable. The current financial crisis is only the beginning of a significant change in how we live. Astrologers look at this as part of a broader consciousness shift, but a new world won’t show up all by itself – and I don’t think the corporations will go quietly.

Get out your Molotovs

The Saturn-Uranus opposition is the most influential alignment of the year. The opposition was exact on November 4th, 2008 - a day to remember in the US - and the opposition recurs, so its impact extends into mid 2010. It was obvious that the US election was tied to a broader cultural shift and generational change. This opposition is all about rebellion against authority, a generational conflict and a struggle between the haves and the have-nots. This two-year period is set to echo the late 1960s when revolutionary attempts around the world were squashed by brutal police forces. Since then a lot of those hippies have sold out and become public figures. This opposition will be strongest in February and September, so we can expect some nice fireworks.

Holidays on the San Andreas

With Saturn retrograde until 17th May the energy of authority figures will be confused the first half of the year and it will be hard to tell which side people are on. A Mars-Saturn opposition on the 5th April has some astrologers predicting seismic activity, so avoid holidays near fault lines. Outback Queensland might not be everyone’s cuppa but it is about as far from tectonic plate activity as you can get and still have hot springs.

Saturn enters Libra on October 30th, so expect diplomatic solutions and a new capacity to empathise with the other. Peacemaking will characterise the following two and a half years, which may or may not work, but at least they're trying.

Changing lightbulbs on the Titanic

Jupiter enters Aquarius this year on the 5th January, firing up everyone’s social conscience and creative vanity. Expect lots of horribly self-aggrandising gestures masquerading as altruism. Hubris and ego will dominate, but at least the rhetoric shifts to a more positive attitude. As Mercury starts the year in Aquarius, we can expect a lot of Let’s Talk About Me. This will backfire as people react against shallowness by throwing sand at Paris Hilton. Excess is out. It is now fashionable to be doing something substantial with your life and looking after the planet. Half of Sydney is suddenly out of work.

Hope flu

A lovely Jupiter conjunct Neptune in Aquarius also colours 2009 with hope, optimism and inventiveness, as people find new and interesting ways to outwit the banks, brick walls and police forces. Aesthetically pleasing crimes will crop up regularly and public sympathy will be with the underdog. More significantly, technological solutions to environmental crises will develop rapidly in the middle of the year. The 26th January solar eclipse in Aquarius lends another joyful aspect to the early part of the year, as people become disillusioned with social networking sites and stupid nationalist rituals. Putting photos of your new Aussie flag tattoo on Facebook is so last year.

More seriously, European politics will begin to suffer from the wave of hope that seems to be going around like bird flu. UK elections are due by May 2010, and this year will bring some new voices into the mix of tired old codgers that have been going on for so long, while on the continent violent protests will delight some and frighten others, and the old arguments about inclusiveness will challenge the EU to reassess its borders - again. Latin Americans will also be looking more realistically at organising together as global power shifts further away from US dominance. Cuba and the USA will find themselves chatting amiably about the benefits of heavily propagandist states as their fragile economies collapse.

iBrains

The first Mercury retrograde of the year starts 11th January and ends February 1st in Aquarius. All the Mercury retrogrades are in the air signs this year so we will have fun with communication breakdowns and technological mishaps. There will be talk of Web 3.0 as people finally get iPhones embedded in their skulls. But instead of withdrawing into technology, we will be using it to collaborate more closely. Horrible new electronic zombie bands will frighten anyone over 25.

Musical Mortgages

Venus in Pisces right now can be blamed for any sentimental reactions to all this. The planet of love and design goes retrograde in Aries from March 6. Don’t get married this Autumn. Relationships are going to be tense and older singles should be happy - the financial crisis will precipitate a lot of divorces, so some markets will open up.

Bangs & Whimpers

A Saturn-Pluto square on November 15 will surprise everyone – prime time for a shock terrorist attack or assassination. Subsequently, Mars retrograde in Leo might leave us all feeling a little deflated over Christmas. Like all that we might have achieved in terms of peace has somehow eluded us. As though all that talk of hope and change and new eras was just… fluff.

But that’s humanity for you. Happy new year.
